Robin's knowledge and technical expertise on the construction of the McLaren cars has provided the project's writer with a unique insight into the team and the life of Bruce McLaren.

Robin Herd was born in England in 1939. By 1965 he was a senior research scientist with the National Gas Turbine Establishment and involved with design work on the Concorde project. Bruce McLaren, meanwhile, had become very interested in the new and rapidly developing science of aerodynamics as it applied to motor racing. So when the two of them met and Robin expressed an interest in racing car design, he quickly became a new employee of the McLaren Racing team.

Over the next several years Robin Herd worked on the designs of the team’s Formula One cars and helped to shape the Can Am cars that would absolutely dominate the series from 1967.

Robin left the McLaren team in 1968 and would later go on to form the March racing team, which competed in various forms, in Formula One, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Indycars. At one time he also owned the Oxford United soccer team, and established a company to investigate natural ways of producing energy.

In 1986 Robin Herd was awarded a CBE for his services to the motor racing industry.
